A baton in this relay would be a club pennant or flag. It gets handed off from 'couper to 'couper as it's flown on a tour of all 48 contiguous states. The rules are, at least one full-stop landing in each state, to be entered in a special logbook that travels with the "baton." Additionally, the pilot submits at least one photograph that shows the "baton" in frame with an airport sign or other identifiable state landmark.
